The Story of Drag Queen Storytime to Drag Storytime
There has been a evolution. Drag Queen Storytime started with the Elgin County Library, the Middlesex County Library, St.Thomas Public Library and 3 Drag Queens, Miss Lita, Miss Shaneen and Mz Affra Tighty. These 3 Queens would go to the libraries to sing songs and read stories that were chosen by library staff. The first Drag Queen Storytime was in May 2019 at the Parkhill Library. The storytellers continued in person storytimes until January 2020. During that time they went to 16 different locations in Elgin, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Perth and Oxford Counties. Over 1000 children, parents/caregivers attended these storytimes.
Then Covid-19 closed the libraries closed. The Drag Queens came together and reached out to friends and virtual Drag Queen Storytimes were born. Six Drag Queens were taped singing songs and reading stories. These were funded by Elgin County Pride, Oxford County Pride, Pride London Festival, and Strathroy Pride. There were 16 storytimes produced and aired between June 2020 and September 2020. There have been over 10,000 views on Facebook and Youtube.
To be more inclusive, the name changed to Drag Storytime when 2 Drag Kings were added to the mix in the fall of 2020. Also, joining the partnership was Oxford County Library. There were 19 storytimes produced and was funded by TD Bank. A special storytime was produced as a thank you to the SWO Optimist Clubs and their Governor at the time Ruth Quenneville that aired at the annual convention on August 22. 2020. The libraries launched the first of the new series on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 10:00 am.
